It’s June & It’s Hot!

If you love the outdoors like I do, the only thing that causes you to hesitate to go outside in the summer is the heat. Picking the right time of the day, early morning or late evening allows you to continue with some fun, yes, I said fun, in the yard!

You hear me talk about pruning, the importance of it, and how often it seems to need to be done. Yet, certain plants need to be pruned in June. Not your flowering plants, but your trees, vines, and larger bushes.

Just like there is a good way to plant and fertilize, there is a best way to prune. Using the right tools, pruning in the right spot, and the right amount ensures better growth into the fall. For more information, read this article in Home and Gardens for more details.

Even in the heat of summer, we want our flowers to flourish. All flowers are not equal. Some flowers love the sun and some do not. In my yard, shade is rare, but a few spots lend to partial shade all day long. This can give you beauty all summer long. Which ones do you like and which ones can’t take the sun?

Probably my favorite are ferns. You may say, there is no color in ferns, but I say, green is one of my favorite colors. Mixing ferns with shade-lover flowers can bring a smile to any gardener. For example, plant ferns in the background, next, shade lilies, then caladiums and ajuga in the front part of your space. Whatever you do, don’t neglect getting in the yard this summer. Skirt around the heat, wet yourself with the water hose, sit in your Adirondack chair early in the morning, and enjoy the blessings of God.

Let me end with a Bible verse in the book of Lamentations 3:22-25.

It is because of the Lord’s lovingkindness that we are not consumed.
Because His [tender] compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great and beyond measure is Your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion and my inheritance,” says my soul;
“Therefore I have hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him.”
The Lord is good to those who wait [confidently] for Him,
To those who seek Him [on the authority of God’s word].

Until next time, Happy Gardening!
