Roses are red…

Roses are red and violets are blue, but roses can be blue too!

Recently a good friend of mine wanted to plant roses along the east side of her house. Knowing little about roses, our conversation was at its best at an elementary level. So we set our minds to research.

Roses are not that temperamental and require about the same amount of care as other blooming plants. The rose flower with its perfumed smell is one of the most sought-after flowers to give as gifts. We discovered planting a rose bush in a well-drained area produces the best blooming buds!

Gary Bachman, friend, and expert on Southern Gardening, writes about the climbing rose, saying that name is debatable, that grows well in the South. His article sheds light on types, tropics, and trellises for roses.

We hear about the overwatering of roses and the need to build up the planting area for good drainage. Although this can be a problem for most plants, for roses it affects the beautiful blooms that are their calling card. You can find much information on the web about this but here is a brief article by Evergreen Seed.

Now for fun! What do certain rose colors represent? Red for love. Yellow for friendship. White for purity and loyalty. But the blue rose? Mystery! Since it does not exist in nature yet beautiful in color, we will let it remain just that, a mystery.
